Manganese Greensand Iron Filter
These Iron Filter systems use a high quality manganese greensand media. The system is installed in the main water line. When the raw water enters your iron filter it passes down through the filter media and gets oxidized. This causes precipitation of the minerals and any iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide present in your water supply is trapped resulting in a clean, filtered water flow to your household. The filter media is periodically regenerated automatically, backwashing the trapped minerals to waste and regenerated by replacing the oxygen. This is done by introducing potassium permanganate to the media. The system comes with the Potassium Permanganate container. With proper installation it removes the following contaminants resulting in healthier water. (removal per cubic foot)
- 15 ppm of both ferric (oxidized) and ferrous (clear) iron
- 5 ppm of Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor)
- 10 ppm of manganese
Note: These systems are design for water supplies with pH between 6.2 and 8.8. If your water supply has a pH of 6.1 or less, you need to neutralize pH before passing through this system.
Manganese Greensand filters are deigned for operation with intermittent regenerations. That is to say that they will treat a “batch” or calculated amount of water before regeneration will need to take place. It is important to remember to not allow the filter to reach complete exhaustion before regenerating.
Basing the removal capacity on a total combined concentration of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide, the following is a typical example or template for deter- mining the approximate demand on a greensand filter.
b>Manganese Greensand is capable of reducing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from water through oxidation and filtration.
Soluble iron and manganese are oxidized and precipitated by contact with higher oxides of manganese on the greensand granules. The hydrogen sulfide is reduced by oxidation to an insoluble sulfur precipitate. Precipitates are then filtered and removed by backwashing. When the oxidizing capacity power of the Manganese Greensand bed is exhausted, the bed has to be regenerated with a weak potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution thus restoring the oxidizing capacity of the bed. 1½ to 2 ounces of potassium permanganate, in solution, per cubic foot of Manganese Greensand is considered sufficient for normal regeneration. It is required to vigorously backwash and regenerates the bed when it is placed in service and before its oxidation capacity is totally exhausted. Operating the bed after oxidation capacity is exhausted will reduce its service life and may cause staining.
To regenerate the filter media two different methods are available. Potassium permanganate, (a purple powder which automatically cleans, regenerates, and disinfects the greensand filter media with each backwash) or, a LMI chlorine injection pump installed in front of the greensand filter.
If your water has both iron and manganese, or iron and hydrogen sulfide odor, or iron bacteria, Chlorine injection is a very effective approach to achieve clean odor-free water through out the house! The big advantage to this system is that if E-Coli is present in your water supply there is no need to sterilize your water with the extra cost of a Sterilight UV system.
Our Coconut Shell granulated carbon backwashable systems can then remove the injected Chlorine, Taste and Odor to leave your water how it should always be.
All models come complete with filter tank, auto backwash control valve, bypass valves, Greensand filter media, and potassium permanganate solution tank.
We do not supply or stock potassium permanganate. It can be bought at your local water filter store. We also are unable to supply the liquid chlorine which is readily available at your local pool shop.
This Automatic LMI Chlorinator pumping system does not have the Regenerating Valve or tank as the Chlorine regenerates the media all the time. A manual Backwash head is supplied as standard. The LMI Pump and auto Flow valve to control the LMI pump is included in the systems cost.
